New Orleans Canal Walk

an urban park proposal for the city of new orleans

A speculative project envisioned by Crooked Works and developed in collaboration with Randy Crandon, the proposal seeks to leverage the existing flood canals of New Orleans as a new place of public gathering in the city. The proposal is centered around establishing a series of entry and egress points into the canal where various activities including urban hiking, skating, biking, kayaking, public art, and bird-watching could take place. A kit of parts comprised primarily of concrete and reclaimed wood is used to establish a variety of adaptable and resilient programming features responsive to the varied conditions within the canal system. By encouraging the city of New Orleans to engage with the flood canal, the new public space activates an underutilized resource and serves as a catalyst for discussions centered around strategies of resiliency, sustainable design, and flooding within the area.
